๐ช The thing about this book? I kept changing my mind about who I could trust...
I’ll admit it - Nice Enough to Kill caught me off guard.
I thought I was settling into a fairly straightforward thriller but somewhere between the strange pressure drops at Yankee Pipeline, JD trying to figure out what was actually happening and Sophie’s increasingly complicated world, I realised I was no longer casually reading. I was looking for clues. ๐
And Sophie... she really stayed with me.
I liked that she isn't written as a helpless character waiting for the story to happen around her. She’s sharp, ambitious and knows how to hold her ground. That early meeting with Bryan particularly stood out to me. The way she handled the conversation, especially when she made her boundaries clear, immediately made me curious about her. There was clearly more going on beneath that confident exterior. ๐
Then everything changes.
The control-room attack was probably one of the scenes where I genuinely had to slow down for a moment. The masked shooter, Finn being injured, everyone trapped inside and JD still trying to think logically while the situation was falling apart - that scene had me turning pages much faster than I expected. ๐ฅ
I also really enjoyed the Eric-Sophie storyline. Their conversations about pipeline operations and the energy industry might sound technical on paper but I actually liked those details because they made the bigger conspiracy feel believable rather than conveniently thrown together.
And just when I thought I had a sense of where the story was going, the investigation involving Detectives Lori Reid and Sean Hansen started pulling another thread.
That was the fun part for me.
Every time someone discovered something, I found myself thinking:
"Wait... so what does THAT mean?" ๐ค
There are secrets here that are much bigger than they initially appear and I don't want to say too much because discovering them is half the fun.
Because sometimes the most dangerous person in the room isn't the one holding the gun.
Sometimes, they're the one who looks completely innocent. ๐
