Poetry has the power to capture emotions in their rawest form, and this book by Kanika Prakash does exactly that. This collection is not just a series of poems but a deeply personal exploration of identity, love, longing, and resilience.
Right from the preface, Kanika establishes herself as a poet whose words stem from lived experiences. She weaves themes of feminism, mental health, and self-discovery into verses that feel intimate yet universal. Her background as a lawyer adds a sharpness to her observations, while her travels—from the bustling streets of Delhi to the serenity of the Himalayas—infuse her poetry with contrasting energies of chaos and calm.
One of my favorite pieces in the collection is 'Delhi Ka Ishq', which beautifully captures the nostalgia and romance tied to the city. The imagery of “छत पे सुखाए हुए अचार सी महक” (the fragrance of pickles drying on the terrace) and “करोल बाग की गलियों सी गूंज” (the echoes of Karol Bagh’s alleys) makes the poem feel like a love letter to Delhi, blending personal memories with poetic aesthetics. Similarly, 'War of Ink' struck a chord with me—it contrasts the power of words with violence, a theme that feels incredibly relevant in today’s world.
What i love about this book is the seamless blend of Hindi and English poetry. The bilingual nature adds depth, making the emotions more palpable. The poems touch upon love (Ishq-e-Rukhsati), heartbreak (The Unwritten Chapter), and philosophical musings (The Unknown Destination). Some pieces, like 'Darkness', reflect the despair of the pandemic era, adding a layer of contemporary relevance.
Kanika’s writing is unapologetic, emotional, and thought-provoking. Some poems are soft and lyrical, while others are fierce and unfiltered. The honesty in her words makes this collection resonate deeply. If you love poetry that speaks to the soul, this book is worth picking up.
