The Serpent’s Bridge by S.Z. Estavillo

As a multi-genre reader, I love reading all genres but especially enjoy a good thriller. This book  definitely had me enthralled from the start. It’s a twisty mystery that keeps readers engaged. I was totally at the edge of my seat with the suspenseful plot and well-developed characters. Detective Nazario’s personal journey, coupled with her determination to solve her father’s murder, keeps readers invested in her quest for justice. Through other main characters like Millie and Esperanza, the book sheds light on the challenges faced by immigrants in America, making it a compelling read that resonates with contemporary issues. The collaboration between Detective Nazario and Special Agent Blake Huxley keeps readers guessing as they unravel the mystery together.

So basically the story revolves around Detective Nazario who is unable to get her father’s unsolved murder out of her mind. Her father, Lucas Nazario, was a respected detective in the LAPD but was killed while working undercover and it becomes an unsolved cold case for more than twenty-four years. I liked how it all came together when some new cases arise involving the murders of Mexican immigrants. It forces Detective Nazario on overdrive, and she’s determined to find the serial killer. She discovers a connection to Sanctuary Baptist, a church led by Pastor Stan and his wife, Millie Ann Goodwin. Millie, feeling lonely and disconnected from her son, starts a relationship with someone from the church who becomes a suspect in the case.

Meanwhile, Esperanza Flores, an undocumented immigrant working for the Goodwins ends up being a witness to a murder, putting her and her son Alex in danger. The fact that this novel had a bit of romance made it so much better. The romantic subplot in “The Serpent’s Bridge” really enhances the overall experience of the novel. I was drawn to the sparks that flew between Detective Nazario and FBI Special Agent Blake Huxley. Their relationship has that enticing ‘enemies to lovers’ vibe, which adds a delicious layer of tension. As they work together to catch a serial killer and uncover long-buried truths, they also have to confront their own complicated history. Watching them push past their old grudges to rebuild trust and cooperation was not just exciting—it added a real, palpable emotional depth to their quest. The chemistry between them is palpable, making every scene they share charged with an engaging blend of professional intensity and personal vulnerability.

Along the way, Detective Nazario wonders if the same person who killed her father is behind the recent killings of Mexican immigrants. The Author's storytelling keeps readers engaged with its suspenseful plot and well-developed characters. Detective Nazario's personal journey is exciting as she grapples with her past while seeking justice for her father and the victims of the serial killer. The book also talks about family, redemption, and immigration. Characters like Millie and Esperanza highlight the challenges faced by immigrants in America and the lengths they will go to protect their loved ones. The pacing of the novel is well-done, with twists and turns that keep readers guessing until the end. In conclusion, “The Serpent’s Bridge” is an exciting mystery that will keep readers hooked from beginning to end. With its plot, engaging characters, and thought-provoking themes, it's a must-read for fans of the genre.

I highly recommend.
